According to “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer, people eat chicken, pork, beaf, but they do not know and do not tend to know from where does it come from. This meat brings new pandemic every year. Eating vegetable is more healthier than meat. I believe that we should stop our meat eating habits in order to save ourselves and the environment. Many pigs, chickens etc are sick in farms. companies so not care about the health of the animals. These companies sale many pigs and chickens, which are infected from harmful bacteria. The writer says,” millions of chickens leaking yellow pus, stained by green feces, contaminated by harmful bacteria...or skin conditions are shipped for sale to consumers” (Foer, page 134). After eating sick animals, it transmits disease to human body. The contaminated meat brings new flu every year all over the world. Many people were died by such meat. Recently many Americans died by Swine Flu . Although swine Flu killed many people, American are not aware of eating animals. They are not curious  to know from where the meat is coming from.

Red Meat

Red meat in traditional culinary terminology is meat which is red when raw and not white when cooked. Red meat includes the meat of most adult mammals. Red meat is darker colored meat, as contrasted with white meat. The exact definition varies by time, place, and culture, but the meat of adult mammals such as cows, sheep and horses is invariably considered red, while chicken and rabbit are invariably considered white. The American Institute for Cancer Research and World Cancer Research Fund stated in their report “Food Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective” that there is “ convincing” evidence that red meat intake increases the risk for colorectal cancer, and that there is “suggestive” evidence that it increases the risk of lung, pancreatic and endometrial cancer. Red meat consumption is associated with cardiovascular diseases, possibly because of its high content of saturated fat. It has been proven that increased beef intake is associated with fatal ischemic heart disease.

In “The End of Overeating”, David A. Kessler, MD says that food, which is rich in sugar, salt, and fat test good; nevertheless, it affects us negatively. Fried food those we get in fast food restaurants are high in fat and sugar. These foods are consisting of unsaturated fat and hydrogenated oil. Companies like to use unsaturated fats in their food because they are cheap. Consequence of consuming such food can cause serious health problems. Food with sugar, salt and fats increase the cholesterol level, weight, heart diseases and high blood pressure. Some foods that are sold in fast food restaurants have high level of amino acid tyramine and phenyethyamine. The tyramine increases blood flow to brain which can lead to a headache. It has been proven that the high level of fat may cause a fast decline in people’s ability to think, learn and remember, according to University Medical Center in Chicago.

effect of fast food items

In “The Dollar Menu”, one of the video of YouTube has brought out the reasons of eating fast food items by people and diseases caused by food. In the video Maria Andrea Gonzalez (one of the interviewed woman in the video) says that her family has no time to cook food at home. So, they get buy cheap food from fast food restaurants. She knows that food items that are bought from drive through are unhealthy, but she doesn’t have time to prepare. Many expensive food items in grocery stores are healthy. However, the food items that are harmful for people’s health are sold in cheap price (such as soda, meat etc). Some people eat fast food items daily and many of them have serious health problems. Although they spend $ 2 to buy food, they are spending hundreds of dollar to cure their health caused by food they have eaten. Rosa Sota (California Center for Health Advocacy) says that type 2 diabetes is caused by the food, which are sold in drive through, such McDonald’s, Burger King etc.

In “Fast Food Nation” Eric Schlosser has explored the physical and mantel torture faced by the meatpacking industries’ employees. Many workers of these industries are illegal immigrants. Because of financial instability and language barrier, they are forced to work in such companies. These companies often pay less and give dangerous job. They do not give these workers to join labor union. So, when the employees injured, companies do not pay compensation. Many of these injured workers are not getting medical benefits. Do you imagine how much these meatpacking industries give compensation for the family of dead workers when they died at job? The value of workers is only $480 for these employers. Writer has clearly stated the emotional and physical pain of meatpacking companies’ employees. They have treated workers unacceptably. Furthermore, some female workers are facing sexual harassment. Their supervisors force to do such worse thing. If these employees do not willing to do, supervisor threaten to eliminate them from that company. Many of these workers do not have legal papers and they may not get job in other places. As a result, they are forced to sit silence of such harassment.

Obedience

Eric Schlosser has talked about obedience in “Fast Food Nation” (page 75). Obedience is when somebody obeys the rules and does what he or she was told to do. In addition, obedient is dutifully complying with the commands, orders, or instructions of one in authority. For example of obedience that we can easily relate to are parents instructing their children as to what they should do. When parents instruct their children, they are not happy when they only obey a portion of their commands. They want their children to obey all that they tell them. If a parent told his child to focus on his study, not to out to roam with his or her friends like gypsy, and if child went out without following his or her parent’s instruction that is not an obedience. Obedience is the act or practice of being obedient.

In “Fast Food Nation” Eric Schlosser writes about the concept of encroachment. Encroachment is when franchisor opens same chain nearby existing franchisee and cut downs the sales of existing franchise. In the book Schlosser has shown that franchisees were opposing to open the same china nearby which cut down their business. For instance, if there is only one grocery store in a curtain area, like village, the store has more customers and sales more. Most of the people come to buy their daily utensil. Customers buy items even if the prices of items are higher. They buy those items because they don’t have choice. They cannot find another store nearby. However, if another franchisor opens same chin near to that grocery store, the store sales decreases. Some customers start to go to new store. Sometimes new store gives more chipper than another does. New store tries to attract the customers showing chipper price than the other store has. When this goes on what will be the future of previously existing store? The store has to face several difficulties. It loses its customers as well as revenue.
